It was a warm day, in late April 2014
The sun was shining and the streets were roaring
A Couple friends and I decided, to make the trek to
Downtown Toronto, from our suburb only 35 minutes from the downtown core
We took the bus down, Nine-dollar fare one way
We got to Union, in the mid-afternoon
Took line 2 to Spadina Avenue, we got off and surveyed the Toronto Landscape
People rushing on a Saturday Afternoon
Three punk kids surrounded by business, we decided to take a walk
To our favorite lunch place, A little Japanese joint for the best Ramen
We sat down at a quarter after two, ordered our food
Hot bowls of Japanese noodles
Wooden chopsticks that we pulled apart, we started eating
It tasted so good, we didn’t think of leaving
But we finished our bowls, paid our cheque’s and went on our way
“This place is like Hollywood” I heard someone say
So many films are made here, maybe I’ll make one I thought
The thought slowly faded away as we approached the first store
My Favorite record shop, “Sonic Boom” right near where Honest Ed’s used to be
We looked around for a while, but nothing was catching my eye
I looked through the punk section, a decent selection
I found the Minutemen, I was interested as I just finished watching
“We Jam Econo” and I thought of D. Boon dying at 27
Double Nickle on A Dime, they’re best album
I picked it up as I hadn’t listened to it at the time
History Lesson Part II would be a great song to die to
(Instrumental Break)
We walked out of the store with a decent haul
Some Minutemen, Black Flag, and Fugazi albums
We started towards Queen where the next store was
The Black Market off Queen and Spadina, a punk rock affair
t-shirts that say funny shit, and vintage clothing from the 80’s
Patches and pins, and the clerk is a glam rocker or Goth
With a black mesh top, we look around this interesting and underground shop
I heard a voice call out to me, she didn’t know my name
She looked at my shirt and said “Nirvana”
And she asked do you know how Kurt and Courtney met? I said “no”
They met at a Butthole Surfers Concert she said and at that point
I realized Pepper was playing
She sang along to the song while I stood and looked at her
We talked about music a little bit, she asked what favorite Nirvana album was
I said Bleach, she said that’s her favorite too. And at that point I knew
Me and my friends looked around for awhile longer, and she disappeared into the store
My gay best friend decided to look more and me and the tall one went out for a smoke
We lit our smokes, Pall Mall Blue. Pulled out our packs that we bought underage
She comes out and asks for one from one of us, and I happily obliged
She lit it and asked what my name was.
I said Eliot Smith, and she said “oh, just like the musician”
I said I get that all the time and how it was sad how we died
She asked me if I played any instruments and I said “yea, I play a few”
She said which ones and I said, guitar, drums and keyboard and I guess I can sing a little
She said she played guitar and drums
I said “That’s great” and we finished our smokes and exchanged numbers

Under The Bridge

When we were just fifteen years old
laying under the bridge
Panting and tired from the running we just did
We didn't care about much back then
What did we lose under the bridge (x2)
Feeling nice from the rivers mist
knowing my youth would be sorely missed
I wish I could be here forever
Lost in my happy known escape
with friends I'll know forever
that I won't lose under the bridge
What did we lose under the bridge (x2)
